How to remove the background from a photo
- Upload a JPG, PNG or WEBP photo using the upload box above.
- Press Remove Background Now. An AI model running in your browser finds the main subject and cuts out the rest.
- Press Template to keep the background transparent, choose a solid colour or gradient, or upload your own background image.
- Press Download to save the result as a PNG file. Use Choose another photo to start again.
What backgrounds can I choose?
The tool includes twelve ready-made options: transparent, white, studio grey, sky blue, sunset, corporate navy, nature green, royal purple, festive gold, passport blue, passport red and a soft pastel. You can also upload any picture from your device and use it as the new background.
Using it for passport-style or ID photos
Many forms ask for a plain light or coloured background. Check the official notification for the exact colour and photo rules, because they differ between exams and countries. If the form also needs a particular file size or pixel size, finish the background first, then use the image compressor to reach the size limit. The download is a PNG, and compressing it afterwards gives you a JPG.
Tips for a clean cut-out
- Use a sharp photo with good light, where the person or object stands out from the background.
- Avoid backgrounds that are nearly the same colour as the subject, such as a white shirt against a white wall.
- Very fine edges like loose hair or fur can look rough. Try a different photo if the edge matters.
- Shoot the subject fully in the frame. Parts cut off by the photo edge cannot be restored.
Why the first run takes longer
The AI model is a large file. The first time you press Remove Background, your browser downloads it, which can take a while on slow mobile data. Your browser may keep it for later visits so the next run starts faster. After the model is loaded, the work is done on your device.
Is my photo safe?
The photo is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers. Only the AI model files are downloaded from a public CDN, and your photo is not part of that request. Read the privacy policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it slow on my phone?
The model runs on your own device, so older phones and very large photos take longer. If it seems stuck, try a smaller photo or close other tabs and apps.
Does it keep the original size of my photo?
Yes. The output has the same pixel size as the photo you upload. Use the image compressor if you need a smaller file.
Can I get a transparent PNG?
Yes. Choose the transparent option in Template, or download directly after removing the background.
I see an error message. What should I do?
Check your internet connection, because the model must be downloaded at least once, then press the button again. If it keeps failing, tell us on the contact page with your browser and device.
