You do not always need a studio to get a clean, form-ready photo. With daylight, a plain wall and a few free tools, you can prepare a passport-style photo at home. This guide covers taking the photo, fixing the background, and sizing the file for an upload.
Note: This is general advice for application forms and photo uploads. Official passport and visa photos follow strict rules that differ by country, so always check the rules of the authority that will receive your photo.
Step 1: Take a good photo
- Light: Stand facing a window so daylight falls evenly on your face. Avoid strong light from behind or from one side, which creates shadows.
- Background: Use a plain, light wall with no pictures or switches in view. Stand a little away from it to reduce shadows.
- Camera: Use the back camera if you can, with the phone at eye level. Ask someone to take it, or use a timer.
- Pose: Look straight at the camera with your head level and shoulders square. Keep your expression neutral and your face fully visible.
- Framing: Leave space above your head and show your shoulders. You can crop later, but you cannot add what is not in the photo.
Step 2: Clean up the background
If the wall is not even, or the form wants a specific background colour, use the background remover. It cuts out the subject, and you can then choose white, blue, red or another colour from the templates. The first run downloads an AI model, so it can take a while on mobile data. Check the edges around your hair and shoulders in the preview, and retake the photo if they look rough.
Step 3: Crop and resize
Use the image resizer and type the width and height from your form. A common shape for passport-style photos is 350 × 450 pixels, which has a 7:9 ratio, but your form may ask for something else. The tool crops to the right shape and then resizes, so your face is not stretched.
Step 4: Reduce the file size
If the form has a size limit, use the image compressor and choose a target below the limit. If the form requires JPG and your file is PNG, convert it with the image converter before or after, and check the final extension.
Step 5: Check before upload
- Is your face sharp, evenly lit and fully visible?
- Does the background look plain and even, in the colour required?
- Do the pixel size and file size match the form?
- Does the photo match what is on your other documents, such as how you normally look?
Mistakes to avoid
- Filters, beauty modes and heavy editing, which can make a photo look unnatural.
- Glasses with glare, hats or headwear that are not allowed by the form.
- Taking a photo of an old printed photo or a screenshot, which loses sharpness.
- Stretching a wide photo into a tall frame instead of cropping it.
